Tait, 25, was a surprise inclusion in a 15-man squad for a five-day training camp in Brisbane to prepare for Australia’s tour of the West Indies this month. Cricket Australia said he would not be involved in the tour but wanted to help his fitness.

Tait was a World Cup winner in the Caribbean last year but after the stress of recovering from an elbow injury having already battled back from a shoulder problem Tait took the brave step of walking away from the game in January after playing his first Test match at home, against India.

The move to call him into the squad shows how the Australian selectors still value him as a strike bowler and who could become the quickest bowler in Test cricket – no doubt a key skill to have in their ranks with an Ashes tour only a year away.

The Adelaide-based Tait has said he will look to make his official comeback at the start of the domestic season in October with South Australia.
