Bigstar Players : Shaun Tait : Diary

It's nice to feel settled in the team
Apr 13, 2007 | Shaun Tait

This World Cup couldn’t have gone any better for me to be honest so far as I’m taking wickets and Australia are winning. What else could I ask? Let's hope it continues.

I’m feeling quite settled in the team now since being given my place when Brett got injured. That feeling is also helping my bowling and my rhythm.

When it’s in your mind that you know you’re going to play the games it gives you a lot more confidence. It helps you settle down and you feel part of the team a lot more. When you’re a young player it can be quite hard sometimes in your own mind. The players welcome you but in your own mind you’re worrying about settling in and becoming a regular fixture in the team.

But this tournament has been perfect; I’m having a great time. A lot of that has come from the captain (Ricky Ponting) because he has helped me relax and told me not to worry about wides or anything like that and to just enjoy it.

It has also been great to spend more time with a legend like Glenn McGrath before he retires. He has helped me even though he may not realise sometimes. I listen to him a lot and learn things when, to him, he is probably just talking normally.

Glenn just thinks of himself as a player in the side and doesn’t want to go around telling people how to bowl. But I listen to him a lot and a word here and there helps me out, with my bowling and confidence.

After the Ireland match we have some tough matches coming up but we are looking forward to the challenge of playing the top sides at the business end of the tournament. Thankfully my bowling seems to be clicking just at the right time.

The England game was definitely the best I’ve bowled so far in the tournament, especially with the new ball because I’ve been practicing bowling with a new cherry in practice so that relaxed me more. And I didn’t try to pitch it up and bowl yorkers too much either; I brought my length back a bit and really hit the track to really get it through to the keeper.

I’ve been excited about coming to Barbados for a couple of matches as there seems to be a bit more pace in that wicket, which is a change to what we’ve had so far.

For the Ireland game people might expect me to blast them out but I tried that in the group matches and it didn’t work out for me. Some of these guys in the non-Test teams aren’t accustomed to the quicker bowling, and I probably got a bit carried away against Scotland and Holland and tried to bowl too fast and really tried to knock them over early and get them off the track.

But I’ve got to be careful because with games coming up against the better sides, if you’re not careful, you can bowl half-volleys trying to knock them over and that might filter through to the next game.

I’ve been working on my bowling a little here and there with Troy (Cooley). He has known me since I was a youngster in the Academy and Institute of Sport in Canberra. He has worked with me before so we get on well and he is good to have around.

I wouldn’t say he has helped too much with my reverse swing as that is more to do with my action. It’s actually a bit hard to speak too technical when you have an action like mine, so I don’t really listen to the technical advice too much.

He might say I should get my front arm a bit higher like during the England game and that worked well. As for reverse swing fortunately my action allows that to happen. What I would say is that the ball can slide down to the leg side sometimes so troy might say to attack off stump more. I hope I’ve got it right just at the right time as there is a lot to play for.
